Reinventing The Home
Reinventing homes to promote well-being, sustainability, and safety is not only a personal choice but a societal necessity. Creating healthier living spaces will not only transform individual lives but will also contribute to a healthier, more resilient UK population, helping to ease the pressure on the NHS and building a brighter future for all.

The Evolution of the Kitchen: From Outdoors to the Heart of the Home
The kitchen has transformed dramatically over time, moving from a utilitarian, outdoor space to the very heart of modern homes. In ancient times, kitchens were often located outside the main living areas. This was largely for safety reasons—open flames from cooking fires posed a risk of burning the house down—and to keep smoke and heat away from the living quarters.
By the Middle Ages, kitchens began to move indoors in wealthier households, often located in separate rooms or in basements to isolate cooking from the main living areas. However, in many homes, especially in rural areas, cooking was still done over open hearths, often in a corner of a large communal room.
The Industrial Revolution in the 19th century brought significant changes, with the advent of gas stoves, improved ventilation, and running water. This allowed kitchens to become more functional and cleaner spaces within the home. By the mid-20th century, as homes became smaller, kitchens evolved into efficient, integrated spaces. Open-plan designs, which merged cooking and dining areas, became popular, turning the kitchen into a social hub.
Today, the kitchen is often the central gathering space in modern homes. With open-plan layouts and multi-functional designs, it’s not just a place for cooking but for family life, entertaining, and even work. Modern kitchens blend practicality, aesthetics, and health-conscious materials, embodying the evolution from a hidden utility room to the vibrant heart of the home.
